Barry Smith

Barry Smith's Bio

Mr. Smith has worked for 13 years at Cheyenne Mountain High School, and the last 7 years as the Counseling Department Chair.  Mr. Smith is a Wisconsin native (yes, a “Cheesehead”), earning his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin – Madison, and his Master’s in Educational Psychology - School Counseling at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee.  He worked in two suburban Milwaukee school districts for 11 years before moving to Colorado in 2004 with his wife and two boys.

One of the best things Mr. Smith enjoys about being a Counselor at CMHS is that he is able to work with one class of students all four years.  This allows Counselors the ability to focus on the needs of their students as they develop and grow over the 4 years.  Mr. Smith values the academic, college and career advising that he can bring to students and parents at critical junctures in their high school career, not just during the senior year.  The ongoing development of Individual Career and Academic Plans (ICAP) for students at CMHS will ensure that all students and their parents are engaged in this process.

Mr. Smith takes a special interest in developing programs that involve and educate parents on a variety of topics regarding adolescence.   He first created the Parent Enrichment Nights, which ran for five years, and recently helped co-found the Family Awareness Network (FAN).  FAN organizes and promotes parent education programs throughout the year, with such topics this past year as Freshmen and Parent Seminars, Race To Nowhere film showing, and a Drug and Alcohol Culture in the Community.  Mr. Smith also conducts parent workshops on “Successful Homework Completion,” and “High School Success Skills.”

Mr. Smith serves in other roles, including AP Testing Coordinator, Link Crew Advisor, High School Crisis Coordinator, and Open House and Registration Night Coordinator.

In his free time Mr. Smith enjoys a variety of activities. He is a 12-time marathon runner, 17-time cross country skiing marathoner, and has completed the Pikes Peak Ascent 6 times.   Mr. Smith also enjoys mountain biking, serving for 4 years as the Team Director and Head Coach for the Cheyenne Mountain Cycling Club team.
